Description:

The interactive instrument Ataxia has been developed by Pablo Palacio. It is composed by two softwares: Eyesweb for the motion-tracking and Supercollider for generating and controlling the music. The performer can then actively control the accents of an isochronic pulse. This responsive environment is used by the martial artist Marcello Lussana, taking advantage of the fast kung fu movements that create a strong response of the sound. The performance combines this two kinds of "technologies": the old art of Hung Gar Kung Fu (one of the traditional Kung Fu stiles) with motion-tracking and digital music. The Kung Fu system is a "technology of the body", that the practitioner learn with regular practice and dedication, resulting in an internal, perceptional discovery of the self. This process is hard to show in images, but through the responsiveness of the Ataxia instrument, one can appreciate the quality of the movements and enjoy the musical feeling of this connection. The control and perception of the body is transformed in music that in turn shapes the movement, generating a perceptional loop of new and old, of body perception and music hearing. In this way new and old show their possibilities and limits, reminding us of the pre-digital era but at the same time winking at the potential of technology: this contradictory effect is typical of the cyborg, a mixture of human elements and technology that the Kung Fu version of Ataxia put into question.
